Renuka Homprasad Meena Khanal: From Discovery to Gold — A Journey of Grit and Glory in Indian Ball Badminton
Every sporting journey begins with curiosity. For Renuka Homprasad Meena Khanal, that curiosity transformed into a defining life path — one that led her from exploring multiple games as a teenager to proudly wearing the Indian jersey and winning Gold for the nation.
An Indian Ball Badminton player with relentless determination, Renuka’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering passion.
Discovering Ball Badminton
Renuka has loved sports since childhood. At the age of 16, she began actively participating in various disciplines including kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, badminton, sepaktakraw, handball, dodgeball, and ball badminton.
Interestingly, ball badminton was completely new to her. She had never even heard about the sport before. But what set her apart was her willingness to step outside her comfort zone. Instead of choosing familiarity, she chose challenge — and that decision changed her life.
Slowly, the unfamiliar sport became her passion.
The Beginning of Competitive Success
Her first major breakthrough came in 11th standard, when she represented her district at the Maharashtra State Inter-District Championship. Her team finished as runners-up at the School State level — a significant early milestone.
Just four months later, she earned selection to represent Mumbai at the Junior National Championship in Manipur. That tournament marked her first national-level experience — a moment that expanded her ambitions beyond state boundaries.
The Pandemic Test of Character
Like every athlete worldwide, Renuka faced the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19. With grounds closed and team practice halted, competitive momentum came to an abrupt stop.
However, adversity often reveals true commitment.
Under the guidance of dedicated instructors, she continued training at home — focusing on fitness drills, conditioning exercises, and wall practice. While the world paused, her discipline did not. The pandemic became not a break, but a test of endurance.
University and National Recognition
When competitive sports resumed, Renuka returned stronger.
In 2021, during her second year of Bachelor’s degree, she was selected to represent the University of Mumbai at the All India Inter-University Championship. In the same year, she represented Maharashtra at the West Zone/National Championship in Rajasthan, where the team secured the runner-up position.
Over the years, she competed in five All India Inter-University Championships and represented her state and district across multiple national tournaments held in 5–6 different states.
Each tournament sharpened her game. Each defeat strengthened her resolve. Each medal deepened her belief.
The Dream: Representing India
While representing her state and university was a matter of pride, Renuka’s ultimate dream was clear — to represent India.
In 2025–2026, when the Ball Badminton Federation of India and the Ball Badminton Federation of Asia organized the South Asian Ball Badminton Championship at the international level, the opportunity arrived.
The selection process was intense. Talented athletes from across the country competed for limited spots in Team India. During this crucial phase, Renuka received immense support from Maharashtra Secretary Atul Ingle Sir and her coach Sarath Pillai, who guided and encouraged her during the demanding selection trials in Delhi.
Despite strong competition and uncertainty, she gave her absolute best.
After days of anticipation, the life-changing news arrived — she had been selected to represent Team India at the South Asian Championship held in Patna, Bihar.
A Golden Moment for India
Wearing the Indian jersey is every athlete’s dream. For Renuka, that dream became reality.
At the South Asian Ball Badminton Championship, she proudly represented the nation and played a vital role in securing the Gold Medal for India.
It was more than just a medal — it was the culmination of years of sacrifice, discipline, setbacks, and belief.
Today, Renuka Homprasad Meena Khanal stands not only as a national gold medalist but as an inspiration to young athletes who dare to explore new paths and embrace challenges.
Her journey proves that greatness often begins with curiosity — and grows through courage.
And for Renuka, this is not the destination.
It is only the beginning of a greater journey ahead.
